28 AIRPORT TRAFFIC Cambodia has emerged as one of the fastest growing markets in Southeast Asia, recording on average 18% passenger growth for the second consecutive year in 2013. Passenger traffic increased by 15.2% in Phnom Penh and 19.8% in Siem Reap while domestic traffic between Siem Reap and Sihanoukville increased by 51% in 2013 compared to 2012. The Cambodian airport authorities recorded a 17.7% increase for the three International Airports compared year-on-year. Phnom Penh International Airport handled 2.39 million passengers while Siem Reap International Airport, which serves the Angkor Wat temple, handled 2.66 million passengers. Cambodia Airports, the operator of the three International Airports, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, handled 5.07 million passengers in 2013. FIGURE №5. TOURISTS ARRIVALS TREND The evolution in tourism arrivals is also evidenced by unabated growth year-on-year, which also establishes a seasonal pattern, with fluctuation peaks in March, July-August and December: The geography and climate of Cambodia have made it a popular destination in winter months: The intense development of Cambodia as a tourism destination has been perpetuated by the development of important transportation infrastructure; in particular Cambodia’s two international airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap respectively.
